A few minutes walk north of the Kota train station and you are in the centre of old Batavia, as the Dutch colonists called Jakarta. Around the cobbled Taman Fatahillah Square, you’ll find the Jakarta History Museum (housed in the old town hall, built in 1627), Fine Arts Museum, and Puppet Museum, and just west over the canal is the grand residence of the former Dutch Governor General.



Walk north along the canal past fine 18th century mansions until you come to the last surviving Dutch drawbridge, the Maritime Museum, Watchtower, and fish market, and the old port full of brightly painted wooden schooners.

Then hop on a southbound train at Kota station. Three miles later you’ll emerge from the vast Gambir station into Merdeka Square, dominated by the 450 feet tall monument to the nation. It’s worth a trip to the top, smog permitting.

After that head to the basement National History Museum, which depicts the county’s history through dozens of dioramas; many of which are fantastically anti-Dutch – the colonial power on and off since 1596. On the western side of the square is the excellent National Museum.

Around the square you’ll find some nice Dutch architecture, the catholic cathedral, Ministry of Finance, and Emanuel Church.

Then there’s Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, a 100-acre park with a cable car and monorail and full-scale replicas of traditional houses from across the country. It sounds tacky, but it isn’t. You’ll see costumes and art from all over Indonesia, plus there are regional restaurants and cultural performances.
